I had a lot of requests to share what is planned around here for Ocean Week and beyond. So here is a working list of my current plans for Ocean Week. While I have a rough idea of what we will cover in the coming weeks, I tend to be a little spontaneous for some of the fun activities we do each week.
In a unit study, I try to ensure there is something for everyone - even to keep the toddler busy. So while we will work through the books listed, we are having afternoon fun with sand and animal play, baking ocean cookies, an art project, and a movie!
Ocean Week Unit Study
Hands On:
- Terra Sea Animals
- Kinetic Sand
- Shells (from our own collection)
- Ocean cookies with Summer Cookie Mold
- Hokusai Wave Art (instructions follow) - taken from A Children's Introduction to Art
Wave Art:
I got my foam brushes, acrylic paint, and a ream of paper at Amazon and foam trays from Kroger.
Books & Media:
June Playlist on Spotify (Summer & Oceans) - put this on while making dinner or when kids are playing. It will soak in while they play!
Ocean Anatomy
Ocean: An Encyclopedia
Rivers and Oceans
The Boy Who Held Back the Sea by Thomas Locker
Down to the Sea with Mr. Magee by Chris van Dusen
Ocean Meets Sky by the Fan Brothers
Family Movie:
On Friday to celebrate a job (hopefully) well done, we will watch the Disney Oceans documentary. We have not seen it, but we are hopeful it will be an enjoyable capstone to the unit study.
I hope this is helpful to your family!
xo,
Victoria
